    Kohli's

The Indian cricketing world is witnessing a major shift as two modern greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s are seemingly stepping away from Test cricket. During a crucial BCCI meeting held in Mumbai on May 7, which featured selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar, Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket was confirmed. According to a report in Dainik Jagran, the BCCI had already informed Rohit well in advance that he would no longer be part of their red-ball plans. His disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, including his self-exclusion from the Sydney Test, had already pushed him toward this decision.

In contrast, Virat Kohli’s case remains open. Reports suggest that Kohli has informed the BCCI of his intent to step away from the longest format. However, the board has urged him to reconsider his decision, especially with the crucial England tour on the horizon. The BCCI, while requesting him to stay on, is treating Kohli’s decision as a personal one and is avoiding direct interference. Kohli, who last captained India in Tests during a successful era that included two World Test Championship final appearances, has not made a public statement yet, leaving fans anxious about his future.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has begun looking toward the future. Shubman Gill has emerged as the top candidate to succeed Rohit Sharma as Test captain. His impressive performances and leadership with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL have elevated his standing. Currently the vice-captain in T20Is and ODIs, Gill seems poised to take on a bigger role. As India stands on the brink of a new era in Test cricket, the departure of these two stalwarts marks a moment of transition that could define the team’s long-term trajectory.
