A portion of an under-construction small bridge collapsed in Bihar’s Gopalganj district on the evening of February 28, an official said on Monday. Authorities confirmed that no one suffered injuries in the incident. The Rural Works Department (RWD) of the state government had been constructing the bridge over the Ghoghari river in Siddhwalia block.
Gopalganj District Magistrate Pawan Kumar Sinha visited the site on Monday and immediately ordered strict departmental action. He directed officials to terminate the services of the concerned Assistant Engineer (AE) and Junior Engineer (JE) of the Rural Works Department. Officials stated that the government had sanctioned ₹2.87 crore for the construction of the small bridge. The District Magistrate also ordered the blacklisting of the contractor responsible for the project.

DM orders action after Gopalganj bridge collapse
Speaking to PTI, Sinha said that the preliminary investigation revealed gross negligence in supervision by the concerned AE and JE. He added that the contractor failed to follow the prescribed quality management protocols during the bridge construction. Based on these findings, the administration initiated strict departmental proceedings, including suspension and termination of the engineers involved.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about construction quality and monitoring in the state. Bihar witnessed the collapse of around a dozen bridges, both big and small, across different districts in 2024. Authorities have indicated that they will continue to monitor such projects closely and take firm action wherever they find lapses.
