Tamil Nadu is witnessing a strong ‘Vijay effect’ as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) makes an impressive debut in the Assembly elections.

By 10:50 am on Monday, the party had crossed the majority mark of 118 seats, according to PValue data. As a result, it is now leading in 170 seats, leaving DMK and AIADMK trailing.

Notably, launched two years ago, TVK secured registration with the Election Commission in the same year. Meanwhile, Vijay is also performing strongly on the ground.

For instance, in Tiruchirappalli (East), he leads by over 5,200 votes against DMK’s S Inigo Irudayaraj. Similarly, in Perambur, he is ahead by more than 5,800 votes, with DMK’s RD Shekar trailing.

Initially, what began as curiosity has now turned into a major shock. Within the first hour of counting, early trends pointed to a clear break in Tamil Nadu’s political order.

At first, TVK was seen as a third force. However, it surged rapidly and led in 50 seats by 10 am, as per Election Commission trends. Soon after, by 10:18 am, the tally climbed sharply to 79.

“Vijay leads TVK past 100-seat mark, eyes forming government in Tamil Nadu debut”

A spokesperson for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), said on Friday that the party is on track to form the government on its own. Early trends point to a historic debut in Tamil Nadu.

Contesting its first Assembly election, TVK surged ahead in more than 170 seats. In contrast, the ruling DMK lagged far behind. It was leading in just over 20 constituencies as of 11:15 am, according to PValue data.

“DMK was moving blindly earlier, but now it sees the reality—TVK will form the government on its own,” said party spokesperson Felix Gerald.

Although the numbers may shift as counting progresses, the scale of TVK’s early leads signals a major political wave in Vijay’s favour. The AIADMK followed with around 60 leads. Meanwhile, the DMK, which won 159 seats in 2021, trailed at 38.

Congress, PMK, BJP and other parties remained on the margins in the initial rounds. Local TV channels also reported TVK crossing leads in over 100 seats. AIADMK trailed with around 80, pushing the DMK to third place.

Leads continue to fluctuate as DMK and AIADMK recover ground in some constituencies. However, the overall trend remains striking. Several DMK leaders, including the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, are trailing in early rounds. Some alliance partners are also falling behind.
