GauravCongress and DMK leaders likely to announce seat sharing agreement.

Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Congress chief, suffered a defeat in the Jorhat seat while contesting his first Assembly election, losing to Hitendra Nath Goswami of the BJP, who successfully retained the constituency. The outcome reflected the broader trend in the state, with the BJP heading toward another term in power as it led in 78 of the 126 Assembly seats. By around mid-afternoon, Congress was leading in only 21 of the 99 constituencies it had contested, while its ally Raijor Dal was ahead in two seats, indicating a limited impact of the opposition alliance.

The party’s performance marked a setback compared to previous elections, highlighting its inability to expand its footprint in Assam. Congress had secured 26 seats in 2016 and slightly improved to 29 seats in 2021, but the current trends suggested stagnation or decline. Despite fielding candidates in a large number of constituencies and attempting to consolidate opposition votes, the party struggled to convert its efforts into electoral gains, raising concerns about its organisational strength and voter connect in the state.

Gaurav Gogoi Defeated in Jorhat as BJP Retains Stronghold

Gogoi, son of former chief minister Tarun Gogoi and currently a Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat, secured 46,257 votes in the contest. However, he was comfortably defeated by Goswami, a seasoned BJP leader and former Speaker of the Assam Assembly, who polled 69,439 votes. The margin of victory underscored the BJP’s continued dominance in the constituency and reflected the challenges faced by Congress in reclaiming its traditional strongholds.

Political analyst Kaustubh Deka described the election as a critical moment for Congress, noting that losses in several of its key stronghold seats could make a political comeback increasingly difficult. He observed that a stronger performance could have enhanced Gogoi’s stature in state politics, but the defeat may hinder his future prospects. Adding to the party’s troubles, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia was trailing in Nazira in Sibsagar district, pointing to a broader decline in the party’s influence across regions.
