India’s star badminton player Satwiksairaj Rankireddy opened up about the lack of recognition athletes receive despite representing the country on the global stage. After India won a bronze medal in the Thomas Cup, Satwik expressed disappointment that no officials or representatives came to welcome the team at the airport. He said the experience made him feel ignored and unappreciated after weeks of competing for the nation.

During a candid conversation with India Today, Satwik revealed that the badminton team often struggles to get even basic support and recognition. He shared that players had to design and print their own Thomas Cup jerseys because no official arrangements were made. According to him, such moments show how neglected non-cricket sports still are in India.

Satwik said that despite becoming one of India’s most successful doubles players alongside Chirag Shetty, people still fail to recognise them in public places. He explained that airport staff, restaurant employees, and even common citizens rarely identify members of the national badminton team. The player added that simple appreciation from fans or officials would motivate athletes far more than money.

The badminton star also criticised the country’s social media culture, saying influencers and Instagram celebrities often receive more attention than athletes who bring medals for India. He shared an incident where a restaurant denied him a table, but immediately arranged one for a social media personality. Satwik admitted that such experiences sometimes make him question whether pursuing sports is truly valued in the country.

Reflecting on India’s historic Thomas Cup victory in 2022, Satwik said he expected the achievement to transform badminton in the same way the 1983 Cricket World Cup changed Indian cricket. However, he feels the sport has not received the growth, popularity, or respect it deserves even after major international success. He worries that future generations of badminton players may continue to face the same neglect.

Satwik also pointed out the unequal treatment between cricket and other sports in terms of rewards and recognition. He mentioned that some state governments reward cricketers heavily, while badminton players often receive little attention after international achievements. The player believes authorities, sports bodies, and governments must do more to support athletes who represent India consistently on the world stage.

Despite his frustration, Satwik clarified that he is not demanding luxury or fame. He said athletes only want basic respect, encouragement, and acknowledgment for their hard work and sacrifices. His emotional remarks have sparked a wider debate about how India treats its non-cricket sporting heroes and whether the country truly values athletes beyond major tournaments and Olympic years.
