Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay entered his first Assembly session facing an unexpected political and religious controversy. During the proceedings, DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin repeated his controversial statement that Sanatan Dharma should be eradicated because it divides society. The remark immediately drew attention inside the Assembly and across political circles in Tamil Nadu. Vijay, instead of reacting aggressively, responded calmly by folding his hands and emphasizing democratic respect for every elected representative.

Vijay Avoids Direct Confrontation
While addressing the Assembly, Vijay carefully avoided directly attacking Udhayanidhi Stalin over the Sanatan remark. He stated that every opinion inside the House would receive equal importance, regardless of party strength. Vijay also said his government would accept constructive suggestions and reject harmful advice. His composed response earned praise from supporters, who viewed it as mature leadership. However, critics questioned whether Vijay deliberately avoided taking a clear stand on the sensitive religious issue.
Hours after the Assembly exchange, the government announced the appointment of Vijay’s personal astrologer, Radhan Pandit Vettrivel, as Officer on Special Duty in the Chief Minister’s Office. The timing of the announcement immediately triggered political debate and social media criticism. Opposition leaders and political commentators questioned why an astrologer received an official administrative role. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai indirectly mocked the appointment online, linking it to the earlier Sanatan Dharma controversy.

Allies and Opposition Leaders Criticise Decision
The criticism did not come only from opposition parties. Vijay’s ally, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), also expressed concern over astrology influencing governance decisions. VCK MLA Vanni Arasu stated that governments should prioritize scientific thinking instead of promoting astrological beliefs. DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth also criticized the appointment, saying it sent the wrong message to young people. Political analysts noted that criticism from both allies and rivals increased pressure on Vijay’s newly formed administration.
The controversy also renewed public interest in Vijay’s religious identity and political ideology. Born to a Christian father and Hindu mother, Vijay openly follows multiple faith traditions and often visits temples while also embracing secular values. He describes his ideology as “real secularism,” based on separating religion from governance. However, critics argue that his recent political symbolism and astrologer appointment blur that distinction. With these developments, discussions about faith, rationalism, and political identity are becoming central to Vijay’s leadership in Tamil Nadu.
