The Maharashtra government removed over 92 lakh women from the Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana beneficiary list. Officials initially announced the removal of around 80 lakh names after completing the e-KYC verification process. The latest data shows the number of excluded beneficiaries has now crossed 92 lakh. The scheme originally covered nearly 2.4 crore women across Maharashtra. The recent deletions have reduced the beneficiary base by almost 38 percent. The government removed names after checking eligibility conditions and completing verification procedures. Authorities stated that several factors contributed to the large-scale reduction in beneficiaries. The administration continues reviewing the list to ensure only eligible women receive financial assistance. Officials expect the final beneficiary count after completing the re-verification process.

e-KYC Failure and Eligibility Rules Lead to Large-Scale Deletions
The government removed many names because beneficiaries failed to complete the mandatory e-KYC process. Around 50 to 55 lakh women could not complete verification within the given deadline. Officials provided nearly eight months for beneficiaries to submit their required e-KYC details. Many women missed the deadline despite receiving adequate time from authorities. The government removed their names from the scheme after verification procedures ended. Officials also identified women whose annual family income exceeded the prescribed eligibility limit. Around 12 lakh women crossed the income criteria set by the scheme. The administration removed these names after confirming their financial details through records. The government aims to prevent ineligible beneficiaries from receiving scheme benefits.
The eligibility review also removed thousands of women who crossed the scheme’s age limit. More than 4.5 lakh women exceeded the maximum permitted age of 65 years. Officials removed these beneficiaries after verifying their personal information and eligibility records. The government also detected around 14,000 men who applied for the women’s welfare scheme. Authorities removed these male applicants after finding violations of the scheme guidelines. Beed district recorded the highest number of beneficiary removals in Maharashtra. Officials removed nearly 28 lakh women from the scheme in Beed alone. The district witnessed the largest reduction among all regions across the state. Authorities continue monitoring applications to maintain transparency in the welfare programme.

Officials also removed beneficiaries who received benefits from other government schemes. Around five lakh women were already receiving assistance under the Namo Shetkari Yojana. The government excluded these names to avoid duplicate benefits from multiple schemes. Authorities identified nearly 12 lakh women as income taxpayers during verification. These women reported annual incomes exceeding the prescribed threshold under the scheme rules. The government clarified that the current figures remain provisional after the removal process. Officials will complete another verification round before announcing the final beneficiary numbers. The administration is also examining complaints from women who believe officials removed their names incorrectly. Authorities promised to review genuine grievances before making final decisions.
The Comptroller and Auditor General recently raised concerns about the scheme’s financial impact. The CAG stated that the programme could create additional pressure on Maharashtra’s financial resources. The report questioned the justification of ₹3,541 crore spent under the scheme. Government spending on women’s welfare increased sharply between 2023-24 and 2024-25. The expenditure rose from ₹261.78 crore to ₹33,554.36 crore during this period. The Maharashtra government approved the Ladki Bahin scheme on June 28, 2024. Officials said the verification process would improve transparency and financial discipline. The government continues balancing welfare support with responsible public spending. The scheme remains a major political and social initiative in Maharashtra.
