Trapped Student’s SOS Video Captures Horror Under Rubble

Around 40 to 50 students reportedly occupied the building when it collapsed around 1:30 pm on Sunday. The nearly 50-year-old structure operated as a boys’ PG called Hostel Daze. Police said renovation work was underway on the ground floor before the building collapsed. However, local residents claimed that workers also carried out repair or construction work in the basement. They further said water had collected in the basement following several days of rain. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the accumulated water weakened the building’s foundation. Rescue teams have rescued 11 people from the rubble so far. Ten injured people received treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Meanwhile, rescuers continued their search for anyone still trapped beneath the debris. The tragedy has raised serious concerns about construction safety in densely populated student areas.

A senior MCD official said the building stood on a 55-square-yard plot in a resettlement colony. The structure reportedly had four floors above the ground level, despite permission for only one additional floor. Police registered an FIR against owner Hariram and others after the collapse. Investigators included charges related to culpable homicide, negligence and endangering public safety. Delhi Police later issued a lookout notice against owner Hariram Bansal. Officers also seized his passport and formed 10 teams to trace him. Police conducted raids at several locations connected to Hariram and his associates. Teams also searched properties in Gurugram, where the building owner reportedly lives. However, police said Hariram was not present during the raids. Authorities continued investigating the building’s construction history and possible safety violations.

Rescue Teams Race to Save Students After Delhi PG Collapse

Rescue workers continued receiving calls from students trapped beneath the collapsed structure. BJP MLA Anil Sharma said rescuers remained in contact with people stuck under the debris. He said teams continued their efforts while hoping to rescue everyone safely. Local residents also joined the operation and helped remove rubble using their hands and available tools. The building stood in a crowded locality near Delhi University’s South Campus. Several student PGs, eateries and shops operate in the surrounding area. A local resident said the building contained around 15 rooms. He added that two or three students stayed in each room. Many residents reportedly came from Kerala, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for their studies. They attended colleges including Motilal Nehru College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharm College and Sri Venkateswara College.

Following the collapse, the MCD ordered immediate action against illegal constructions exceeding four floors. Officials also evacuated and sealed an adjoining building that housed a women’s PG. Authorities took the step as a precaution to prevent another possible tragedy. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the collapse site and assessed the rescue efforts. She ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine the exact circumstances behind the incident. Investigators will examine construction work, building permissions and possible structural violations. Officials will also review whether authorities previously received complaints about the property. Rescue teams continued searching the rubble while authorities monitored the situation. The incident has renewed concerns about unsafe buildings housing students in Delhi. Further action will follow after officials complete their investigation into the collapse.
