Pilot Declares Mayday as Learjet Plunges at 22,000 Feet Per Minute

The Learjet crashed near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County, Florida, around 12:50 pm local time on Sunday, November 1. The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was heading towards the Bahamas. During the initial communication, the pilot reported moderate turbulence and icing conditions. The crew also discussed finding smoother air while reporting an outside temperature of minus 47 degrees Celsius. However, the situation deteriorated rapidly, forcing the pilot to declare an emergency and request immediate assistance from air traffic controllers.

The cockpit recording captured the pilot reporting increasingly dangerous descent rates as the aircraft continued losing altitude. “We’re descending 8,000 — Mayday, Mayday! We’re descending 10,000 feet per minute,” the pilot told controllers. Shortly afterwards, he reported an overspeed condition and a descent rate reaching 20,000 feet per minute. The air traffic controller attempted to reassure the crew and offered assistance. “I’m here with you. Talk to me,” the controller said. Despite these efforts, the aircraft continued plunging towards the ground at an alarming speed.

The pilot later warned controllers that the aircraft was about to crash into the ground. Another transmission revealed a descent rate of 22,000 feet per minute and a bank angle of approximately 60 degrees. The recording captured increasingly frantic voices as the crew struggled to regain control. In the final moments, someone inside the cockpit shouted, “Look outside… Holy f**k, we’re out of time!” The transmission ended shortly afterwards. The audio provides a disturbing account of the crew’s final communications and highlights the intensity of the emergency before the aircraft struck the ground.

The Learjet crashed into a residential area near Cresthaven, producing a massive fireball and thick black smoke. Videos recorded by motorists showed the aircraft falling from the sky before exploding on impact. The crash created a large crater on a roadway and triggered an emergency response. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that all nine occupants died in the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board have launched investigations to determine the cause. Investigators will examine icing conditions, turbulence, aircraft performance and the rapid descent. Officials have not yet established what caused the aircraft to lose control.
