About Haq:
In her note, Samantha said she felt compelled to share her thoughts immediately after watching the film, fearing she might lose the intensity of emotions it evoked. She described Haq as deeply human, layered, and free of judgement or bias, adding that such stories are rare and even rarer when brought to life by performers of Yami Gautam’s calibre. Commending both the writing and performances, Samantha said the film made her feel a range of emotions simultaneously, including love, rage, strength, vulnerability and hope, and noted that Yami Gautam’s performance moved her in ways she found difficult to put into words.
Directed by Suparn Verma, Haq features Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi in the lead, with Sheeba Chaddha playing a key role. The courtroom drama draws inspiration from the landmark Supreme Court verdict in Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, which addressed matrimonial rights in Muslim families. The film follows the journey of Bano, a woman who seeks legal recourse after her husband remarries and refuses to provide financial support for their children. While Haq received largely positive critical response, it earned ₹29 crore globally at the box office. The film, however, has found renewed viewership following its Netflix premiere on January 2.
