Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by Tarique Rahman, is heading toward a landslide victory in the country’s first elections since rivals ousted Sheikh Hasina. As vote counting continues, Jamaat-e-Islami trails far behind in second place. By 9:20 am, BNP had secured 177 seats, while Jamaat and its 11 allies had won 53 seats, according to The Daily Star. The Election Commission will likely confirm the final results after it consolidates figures from the remaining constituencies.
With counting still underway, BNP appears set to decisively win the general election and form a new government to replace the interim administration that took power after the Awami League government fell in August 2024.Early trends suggest a landslide victory for the party that boycotted the 2024 elections, though most results are still pending

Tarique Rahman leads BNP and positions himself as Bangladesh’s next prime minister
Tarique Rahman chairs the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and stands poised to become Bangladesh’s next prime minister after a sweeping win. He is the son of former prime minister Khaleda Zia and late president Ziaur Rahman. After 17 years in exile in London, he returned to lead his party.
Rahman entered frontline politics in 2002 when party leaders promoted him to a senior post. Critics called the move blatant nepotism. He later gained a reputation as a strict enforcer of party discipline. Opponents accused him of abusing power for personal gain. He denied the allegations. Supporters said rivals framed him as a scapegoat.
Authorities arrested him on corruption charges in 2007 under a military-backed caretaker government. He alleged torture in custody. After 18 months in prison, he secured release and left for London. Reports said he agreed to step away from politics to leave Bangladesh. He stayed abroad for 17 years before returning.
