Border 2 has emerged as Bollywood’s first blockbuster of 2026, creating waves at the box office soon after its release ahead of Republic Day. The war drama has raked in over ₹400 crore worldwide and nearly ₹300 crore net in India within just two weeks, signaling strong audience approval and commercial success. Critics and viewers alike have praised the film for its high-octane action, patriotic themes, and compelling performances, particularly Sunny Deol’s portrayal. With these numbers, Border 2 not only sets a strong benchmark for Bollywood releases this year but also sparks comparisons with previous hits like Uri and Gadar 2, raising the question of its standing among the biggest blockbusters in recent times.

Border 2 opened strongly on the Republic Day weekend, earning ₹224 crore net in India during its first week, including ₹59 crore on January 26 alone. In its second week, the film added another ₹71 crore, taking its 15-day domestic total to ₹297 crore net (₹357 crore gross). Analysts expect the film to collect an additional ₹15-20 crore in India, with limited further growth. Internationally, Border 2 saw a slowdown after a strong opening weekend and is projected to finish its overseas run around $6 million gross. As of February 6, the film has grossed ₹407 crore worldwide and is likely to end its theatrical run at ₹430-440 crore globally. With a reported budget of ₹275 crore, the film’s earnings mark an impressive commercial performance, though not an extraordinary one.
Border 2 Tops War Dramas Uri Gadar 2 Still More Profitable
Border 2 became the highest-grossing war drama in Indian film history, surpassing Fighter’s ₹344 crore and Uri’s ₹342 crore. While Fighter, starring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, had a high production cost, Border 2 managed to out-earn and out-profit it. Uri, made on a lean budget of under ₹50 crore, earned less than Border 2 but remained more profitable. Comparisons with Gadar 2, another Sunny Deol legacy sequel, show that Border 2 had a similar opening but lacked Gadar 2’s box office longevity. Gadar 2 grossed ₹691 crore worldwide on a production cost under ₹100 crore, making it one of the most profitable Indian films in recent times. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, Border 2 features Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, Medha Rana, and Anya Singh in key roles, and plans for a sequel, Border 3, are already underway.
