US winter storm deaths continued to rise as a powerful storm gripped large parts of the United States, bringing extreme cold, power outages, and major travel disruptions. At least 30 people have died across several states, authorities said.
The Associated Press reported that the storm caused deaths linked to hypothermia, traffic crashes, sledding incidents, and snowplough accidents.
US winter storm deaths reported across multiple states
State officials and local media confirmed the deaths late Monday. In New York City, emergency workers found eight people outdoors during the freezing weekend.
Snowplough accidents killed two people in Massachusetts and Ohio. Sledding incidents claimed the lives of teenagers in Arkansas and Texas. Police in Kansas found a woman dead after she was last seen leaving a bar.
Health officials in Louisiana said hypothermia caused two deaths. Icy conditions also knocked down power lines in Tennessee.
Officials declared states of emergency in at least 20 states and Washington, DC. The measures allowed authorities to deploy emergency crews and resources.
Power outages and travel disruption worsen storm impact
Air travel faced major disruption nationwide. FlightAware reported more than 12,000 delayed or cancelled flights on Monday. Another 285 flights scheduled for Tuesday were cancelled in advance.
Cirium said Sunday recorded the highest number of flight cancellations since the COVID-19 pandemic.
PowerOutage.com reported that over 630,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity by Monday evening. Most outages occurred in southern states hit by freezing rain.
The White House said President Donald Trump approved 12 federal disaster declarations. The move unlocked resources to restore power, clear roads, and support emergency services.
Forecasters warned that freezing temperatures would continue throughout the week. Snowfall was expected to ease, but travel hazards remained.
Meteorologists linked the storm to a disrupted polar vortex that pushed Arctic air across North America. Scientists said such events may become more frequent, although natural weather variability still plays a role.
