    This isn’t just a tale of financial hardship it’s a daily struggle for dignity. In Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, 15 families often rely on a single water tap, while one toilet serves 250 people. 400,000 people per square kilometre. Each person gets just 5×5 feet of space, far less than Mumbai’s average of 19×19 feet—almost 15 times more. Most residents, like the Swami family, are long-time migrants who’ve spent decades hoping for real change.

    Adani’s Bold Vision: ₹2.5 Lakh Crore Plan to Transform Dharavi into a Modern Urban Hub

    That change may finally be here. Or so promises Gautam Adani, India’s most watched tycoon, who has placed a staggering Rs 2.5 lakh crore bet on transforming this chaotic human settlement into a model of modern urban living. Through a special purpose vehicle called Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt. Ltd (NMDPL)—80 per cent of which is controlled by Adani Properties and 20 per cent by the Maharashtra government—the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) aims to reimagine, rehabilitate, and rebuild this iconic urban space. In May, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis approved the master plan and assured that eligible slum-dwellers and businesses will be rehabilitated within Dharavi itself.
