India has responded to US President Donald Trump’s claim that New Delhi would stop importing Russian oil following the announcement of the India-US trade understanding. The Ministry of External Affairs clarified that India frames its energy policies around securing reliable fuel supplies for its 1.4 billion citizens. Officials emphasized that national interest and energy stability guide India’s decisions amid shifting global conditions.

During a press briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed that protecting the country’s energy needs remains the government’s highest priority. He stated that India consistently highlights the importance of maintaining energy security for its large population. He also explained that India focuses on diversifying oil sources based on market trends and geopolitical changes while taking decisions that support long-term national interests.

Earlier, Trump claimed that India agreed to stop purchasing Russian crude and would instead increase oil imports from the United States and possibly Venezuela. He made the statement after announcing a broader trade understanding between the two countries and linked it to global efforts related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, Indian authorities have not confirmed any commitment to halt Russian oil purchases.

Jaiswal also addressed the possibility of importing Venezuelan oil and stated that India remains open to purchasing crude from any country if it proves commercially viable. He highlighted India’s long-standing partnership with Venezuela in the energy sector and said procurement decisions depend mainly on pricing and supply feasibility rather than political pressure.

Russia also reacted to the development and said it has not received any official communication from India regarding the suspension of oil imports. Russian officials stressed the importance of maintaining strong strategic ties with India. Meanwhile, both India and the United States continue negotiations on their trade agreement, and officials from both sides indicate that they expect to finalize the deal soon and release detailed terms later.
