    India’s First Space Mission of 2026 Takes Flight as ISRO Launches PSLV-C62

    The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday launched the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C62, successfully placing an Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) along with 14 co-passenger satellites into orbit. The mission marked ISRO’s first space launch of 2026.

    During its 64th PSLV flight, the rocket carried the Earth observation satellite Anvesha (EOS-N1) into a polar sun-synchronous orbit at an altitude of over 100 kilometres. The launch took place at 10:18 am from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

    PSLV-C62 lifts off from Sriharikota, opening ISRO’s 2026 launch schedule

    ISRO began a 22.5-hour countdown for the mission on Saturday afternoon. NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm, executed the launch. The co-passenger satellites included payloads from both Indian and international customers.

    Under the PSLV-C62/EOS-N1 mission, the rocket first deployed the primary Earth observation satellite developed jointly by Thailand and the United Kingdom. Around 17 minutes after lift-off, it released 13 additional satellites into sun-synchronous orbit.

    ISRO demonstrates KID re-entry capsule after successful satellite deployment

    More than two hours after launch, ISRO scientists separated the rocket’s fourth stage (PS4) and demonstrated the Kestrel Initial Technology Demonstrator (KID), a 25-kg capsule developed by a Spanish start-up. Scientists then restarted the PS4 stage to de-boost the capsule and guide it onto a controlled re-entry path.

    Both the PS4 stage and the KID capsule are expected to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere and splash down in the South Pacific Ocean.

    The PSLV programme has completed 63 missions to date, including landmark launches such as Chandrayaan-1, the Mars Orbiter Mission, and Aditya-L1. ISRO last attempted a PSLV mission in May 2025, but the launch remained incomplete due to an issue in the rocket’s third stage.
