Indonesia is facing growing pressure to review its membership in the United States-led Board of Peace (BoP) following the escalation of the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Religious groups, academics, and civil society organizations across the country have urged the government to reconsider its participation in the initiative, which focuses on Gaza’s reconstruction efforts.
The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has strongly called on the government to revoke its membership. The council argues that the Board of Peace has not demonstrated clear effectiveness in advancing Palestinian independence. MUI believes Indonesia, as the world’s largest Muslim-majority nation and a long-time supporter of Palestine, should avoid being linked to policies connected to the ongoing military actions by the United States and Israel.

Pressure rises on Indonesia to review and exit the Board of Peace amid the US–Israel–Iran conflict
Public figures, activists, and several organizations have echoed similar concerns. They warn that Indonesia’s continued involvement in the Board of Peace could weaken the country’s long-standing “free and active” foreign policy principle. Many critics believe Indonesia must maintain a neutral diplomatic stance and prioritize international law when responding to global conflicts.
Some groups have also urged the government to delay the planned deployment of Indonesian troops to Gaza. Earlier discussions suggested that around 8,000 Indonesian military personnel could participate in an international stabilization mission in the region. However, critics argue that any military deployment should only occur under a clear United Nations mandate.
Meanwhile, analysts have warned that withdrawing from the Board of Peace could create diplomatic tensions with the United States. Indonesia must carefully balance its international partnerships while protecting its national interests and foreign policy principles.
Government officials have indicated that discussions are still ongoing. Indonesia is also consulting with regional partners while closely monitoring developments in the Middle East.
As tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran continue to intensify, Indonesia’s decision regarding the Board of Peace could significantly shape its diplomatic role in global peace efforts and Middle East affairs
