Malayalam cinema icon Mohanlal is mourning the death of his mother, Santhakumari, who died at the age of 90 on Tuesday, December 30. She passed away at her residence in Elamakkara, located in Kerala’s Ernakulam district. Her demise has deeply affected the actor’s family and admirers across the country.
Santhakumari hailed from Elanthoor village in Pathanamthitta district. She later shifted to Thiruvananthapuram with her family following her husband Viswanathan Nair’s professional assignments. Nair, who died earlier, served as a senior bureaucrat and held the position of law secretary in the Kerala government.
Santhakumari lived for many years at the family home in Thiruvananthapuram. After she reportedly suffered a stroke, Mohanlal brought her to Ernakulam to ensure better care. The actor was in Kochi at the time of her death and rushed to her residence immediately after receiving the news.

Mohanlal shared a deep and affectionate bond with his mother and frequently spoke about her influence on his life. After returning to Kochi following his receipt of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he visited her first. Earlier this year, on Mother’s Day, the actor also shared a treasured throwback photograph with her.
The family will most likely take Santhakumari’s mortal remains to Thiruvananthapuram later in the day for the final rites. Mohanlal is the younger of the two children born to Santhakumari and Viswanathan Nair. The family had earlier faced tragedy when their elder son, Pyarelal, died in 2000.
