Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have sharply escalated after Pakistan officially declared what it called an “open war” following fresh airstrikes and cross-border military exchanges.
According to reports, explosions and aircraft activity were heard in Kabul early Friday morning. The developments came shortly after Afghanistan claimed it had launched retaliatory strikes on Pakistani border posts along the disputed Durand Line.
Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, stated on social media that the country’s patience had run out. He described the situation as an “open war” between the two nations. His remarks followed days of rising military tension between Islamabad and Kabul.

What Triggered the Escalation?
The current crisis began after Pakistan conducted airstrikes inside Afghan territory. Afghan authorities later announced that their forces carried out retaliatory operations targeting Pakistani military positions near the Durand Line.
Pakistan’s military confirmed launching an operation named “Ghazab Lil Haq.” Officials said the move was a response to what they described as unprovoked cross-border firing from Afghan forces.
On the other hand, Afghanistan stated that it conducted “large-scale offensive operations” against Pakistani military posts in retaliation for earlier strikes.
Conflicting Claims on Casualties
Both countries have reported heavy military losses and infrastructure damage. However, the casualty figures shared by each side vary significantly. Independent verification of these claims has not yet been possible.
Security analysts warn that the situation could further destabilize the region if diplomatic efforts fail to contain the conflict.
Why the Durand Line Matters
The Durand Line has long been a sensitive and disputed border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Cross-border tensions, militant activity, and territorial disagreements have historically fueled clashes between the two nations.
The latest escalation now marks one of the most serious confrontations in recent years.
