Bangladesh’s first female prime minister and BNP chief Khaleda Zia passed away at eighty years old. She played a vital role in restoring democracy after military rule ended in her home country. This dominant political leader remained influential despite facing long periods of imprisonment and strict house arrest. She traveled to London for medical treatment following the recent ouster of leader Sheikh Hasina. Khaleda Zia was preparing to contest the upcoming February parliamentary elections before her sudden tragic death. These elections were the first since the popular uprising that shook the nation in late 2024. Her family will bury her mortal remains beside her late husband former President Ziaur Rahman.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to Dhaka this Wednesday to represent India today. He arrives to attend the funeral ceremony but his bilateral meeting plans remain currently quite unclear. Bangladesh announced three days of national state mourning to honor the legacy of the departed leader. The funeral of Khaleda Zia will take place on December thirty-one with high security measures. Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus appealed to all citizens to maintain discipline during the funeral prayers. He delivered a televised address asking for order throughout the mourning period across the entire nation. The government expects thousands of people to participate in the final rites of the veteran leader.
