A renewed wave of attention around a US State Department advisory urging American citizens to “leave Iran now” has triggered panic and intense discussion across social media platforms. Although the warning was originally issued on January 13, 2026, its recent circulation led many users on X to describe it as a breaking development. Several others, however, clarified that the advisory is not new and has been in place for weeks.

The State Department released the guidance in mid-January and reinforced it through follow-up security updates. Officials advised US citizens currently in Iran to depart immediately, citing serious security concerns. The alert pointed to ongoing protests, civil unrest, and the heightened risk of detention as key reasons behind the warning.

Authorities also made it clear that Americans should not expect assistance from the US government if they attempt to leave Iran. The United States does not maintain an embassy or consular services in Tehran, which severely limits Washington’s ability to provide emergency support or evacuation help. As a result, citizens must make independent arrangements to exit the country.

    Growing concern and speculation

The advisory’s renewed circulation led to a flood of reactions on social media. Some users speculated about the possibility of military action, while others linked the warning to the protests that have been ongoing in Iran for more than two months. Many expressed concern about public safety and the worsening security situation.
