Naveed Akram appeared in court Monday over the deadly Bondi Beach mass shooting. Prosecutors allege he and his father carried out Australia’s worst massacre in decades. The 24-year-old joined the Sydney hearing briefly through a secure prison video link. Authorities filed 59 charges, including 15 murder counts and a terrorism offense. Police say the pair attacked a Hanukkah event on 14 December.

Investigators say the gunmen killed 15 people and injured more than 40 others. Police fatally shot Sajid Akram, 50, during the chaotic confrontation. Emergency crews rushed Naveed to hospital with critical injuries after the exchange. Officials later transferred him from hospital to Goulburn supermax prison. Monday marked his first public appearance since authorities arrested him.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Sharon Freund asked Akram about extending suppression orders in court. Akram responded with a single word, confirming he heard the discussion. The court protected survivors’ identities while allowing voluntary self-identification if desired. Defense lawyer Ben Archbold said his client had not entered a plea. He told reporters authorities only recently began serving the legal brief.

Archbold said Akram remains in strict custody under demanding supermax prison conditions. He declined to confirm whether police conducted a formal interview. Court documents allege the attackers meticulously planned the assault for months. Investigators say they scouted Bondi Beach two days before launching attack. Police claim videos showed the men referencing extremist ideology and condemning Zionists.

Authorities said footage captured the pair conducting firearms training in rural New South Wales. Officials reported the men fired shotguns and practiced tactical movements together. Police confirmed victims included two rabbis, a Holocaust survivor, and child. The massacre shocked Australia’s Jewish community and drew nationwide condemnation. Akram will return to court in April for further proceedings.
