The Louvre confirmed thieves crushed Empress Eugenie’s crown after dropping it while fleeing last October. Museum officials said the damaged crown remains nearly intact and restoration experts can fully repair it. Raiders stole jewels worth eighty eight million euros but abandoned the historic crown during escape. The diamond studded headpiece belonged to Empress Eugenie wife of French Emperor Napoleon the Third.

The museum released first photographs showing the crown badly deformed after removal attempts failed. Thieves tried pulling the crown through a narrow hole cut into the glass display. Despite damage the crown retains fifty six emeralds and nearly all original diamonds intact. Only ten diamonds and one golden eagle ornament remain missing from the headpiece.

Louvre moves to restore crown after swift gallery heist

Louvre officials confirmed restorers will return the nineteenth century crown to original condition. They emphasized restoration requires no reconstruction because the crown structure survived the raid. An expert committee now oversees repairs under museum president Laurence des Cars leadership. Specialists will carefully reshape metal settings and secure surviving gemstones during restoration work.

The heist occurred on October nineteenth using a stolen vehicle mounted mechanical lift. Thieves accessed the Gallery of Apollo through a balcony overlooking the River Seine. Two intruders cut windows with power tools then threatened guards and evacuated galleries. They smashed display cases holding royal jewellery and escaped within four minutes.

Prosecutors say thieves fled on scooters after completing the swift and coordinated museum raid. Police arrested four male suspects believed responsible for executing the Louvre theft operation. Investigators have not identified the alleged mastermind who planned the high value jewel robbery. Seven stolen jewellery pieces including tiaras necklaces earrings and brooches remain missing today.
