Police arrested a man who impersonated a federal agent while trying to free Luigi Mangione. Authorities say the suspect targeted Mangione, accused of killing United Healthcare’s CEO during 2024. Investigators allege the man falsely claimed official authority to secure Mangione’s release unlawfully. Law enforcement sources confirmed the impersonation attempt triggered immediate arrest and criminal charges.
Suspect Allegedly Posed as FBI Agent to Free Mangione
Prosecutors identified the suspect as Mark Anderson, thirty-six, who visited a New York detention facility. Anderson allegedly posed as an FBI agent and presented supposed court-approved paperwork to officers. Officials say he insisted a judge authorized the inmate’s release during the encounter. Sources later confirmed Anderson specifically aimed to free Mangione from custody.

Fake Credentials Exposed at Brooklyn Detention Center
Anderson approached Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center intake area and spoke directly with officers. When questioned, he produced a Minnesota driver’s license instead of valid federal credentials. He also claimed weapon possession and scattered multiple documents before jail staff. Officers detained him and discovered unusual tools inside his bag during searches.
Investigators say Anderson traveled from Minnesota to New York seeking employment and worked at pizzeria. He now faces charges for impersonating a law enforcement officer under federal statutes. Meanwhile, Mangione remains jailed and faces state and federal murder charges. His case has drawn public attention and sparked national debate over healthcare costs.
