Fatal ICE Shooting Triggers Clash Between Federal Authorities and Minneapolis Leaders

A US immigration agent shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, triggering outrage from city officials and residents. Federal authorities said the agent acted in self-defence, while local leaders accused ICE of reckless use of force.

The Department of Homeland Security claimed Good attempted to strike Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers with her vehicle during a confrontation on a residential street. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey rejected that account, saying an immigration agent misused power and caused a preventable death. He publicly demanded that ICE agents leave the city.

Former President Donald Trump supported the federal version of events, stating that an ICE officer suffered serious injuries after the woman allegedly ran him over. He blamed left-wing activists for escalating hostility toward immigration officers nationwide.

Videos shared on social media show ICE agents surrounding a maroon SUV that blocked a Minneapolis street as protesters stood nearby. Agents ordered the driver to exit the vehicle and attempted to open the door. When the SUV began to move, one agent fired multiple shots. The vehicle then crashed into a parked car.

Eyewitnesses said an agent stepped in front of the SUV and fired through the windshield as the driver attempted to leave. City officials disputed claims that Good posed an immediate threat, saying she was helping neighbors at the time.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz criticized federal agencies for spreading what he called misinformation and promised a full and transparent investigation. The FBI has taken charge of the inquiry as ICE continues its expanded operations in Minneapolis.

The killing sparked protests and vigils across the city and beyond. Minneapolis Public Schools cancelled classes for the rest of the week due to safety concerns, while demonstrators demanded accountability and the withdrawal of federal immigration agents.
