    At least 20 people were killed and over 300 injured as the Nepal government’s ban on 26 social media platforms sparked the country’s deadliest youth protests in years under Sudan.

    Nepal’s Deadliest Youth Uprising After Social Media Ban

    Nepal witnessed its worst youth uprising in years on Monday after the government banned 26 social media platforms. Including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, and X, on September 4. Police opened fire on demonstrators in Kathmandu, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 300. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned on moral grounds after the clashes, while the army secured roads around Parliament as unrest intensified. Later, the government reversed the ban when Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung announc. After an emergency Cabinet meeting, that access to social media platforms would be restored.

    SUDAN GURUNG AT THE HELM

    At the forefront of the protests is 36-year-old Sudan Gurung, president of Hami Nepal, a youth-led NGO that has grown into a civic movement. Sudan Gurung, who leads Hami Nepal, an NGO formed after the 2015 earthquake. It has emerged as a grassroots leader of the country’s youth movement. The earthquake left a deep personal impact on him as he lost his child in the disaster, an event that reshaped his life and pushed him toward activism, according to The Annapurna Express. Once a party planner, Gurung shifted from event organising to disaster relief and civic engagement, gradually building his reputation as a voice for accountability. He gained prominence by spearheading Dharan’s Ghopa camp protest, which demanded transparency at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences. Today, he channels Gen Z’s digital-age frustrations into structured, peaceful demonstrations. And positioning himself as the defining face of Nepal’s new youth uprising.
