At Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, tensions rose after the administration barred over 40 first-year MBA students from appearing in mid-term exams for staying outside the campus overnight without prior approval. In response, nearly 60 students skipped their exams in solidarity, marking a rare collective protest.
The issue began on February 21, when about 75 students went out for dinner. Student groups said campus clubs had informed authorities about their late return. However, security stopped them at the gate when they came back. The group included both first-year and senior students.
Students also criticised how the administration handled the matter. They alleged that officials called the parents of some female students and spoke to them harshly. When authorities barred first-year students from exams, senior students stepped in to support them. As a result, more than 60 students boycotted the mid-terms.

Many students said mid-term exams carry significant academic weight. They also described the action as excessive. Some claimed the institute suspended a few students from the MBA programme and removed them from leadership roles. This move sparked debate online about strict monitoring of postgraduate students.
The institute defended its decision and said the students entered “going home” in the outing register instead of taking proper permission. Officials stressed that these rules exist to ensure safety and accountability. They also confirmed that the barred students will get another chance to take the exams later.
