Typhoon Bavi Triggers Massive Flooding Across Northern China

In Hebei’s Kuancheng county, floodwaters reportedly rose above two metres, making roads impassable and trapping residents in several locations. Videos circulating online captured parked cars floating away and crashing into one another as the fast-moving water carried them downstream. In Liaoning’s Shenyang city, people were seen swimming and using paddleboards to move through flooded streets. The unusual scenes highlighted the scale of flooding that has overwhelmed urban infrastructure.

The latest disaster comes only days after another weather-related emergency involving nearly 900 escaped snakes in southern China. According to reports, many of the snakes, including venomous species, escaped after Typhoon Maysak caused flooding in Hengzhou. Viral videos showed snakes moving through floodwaters and residential areas, raising concerns among local residents. The incident added another challenge to the country’s ongoing struggle with extreme weather events.

Authorities Race to Rescue Residents Amid Growing Weather Crisis

Officials said Typhoon Bavi is the strongest storm to hit mainland China this year. Heavy rainfall and powerful winds affected several provinces, including Jilin, Shandong, Jiangsu and Anhui, increasing the risk of floods and landslides. Authorities warned that areas already saturated by previous rainfall could experience further flooding. Emergency response teams were deployed to monitor vulnerable locations and assist people living in high-risk zones.

State media reported that nearly 1,800 villagers in Kuancheng were stranded due to rising water levels. Rescue and evacuation efforts are currently underway, with relocating affected families remaining the government’s top priority. In Liaoning, officials issued the highest-level red alert for flash floods and advised residents to suspend work, close businesses and avoid unnecessary travel. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions as the region prepares for further heavy rainfall.
