The Dalai Lama has confirmed that the centuries-old institution of the Dalai Lama will continue after his death, reassuring Tibetan Buddhists and global supporters who regard him as a symbol of peace, compassion, and cultural survival. This announcement came ahead of his 90th birthday on July 6.
Over the past 14 years, they has received numerous requests from Tibetan communities in exile, Buddhists across the Himalayan region, Mongolia, Russia, China, and inside Tibet, urging him to ensure the continuation of the Dalai Lama lineage. Responding to these appeals, he clearly stated his intention to uphold this tradition.
During a religious gathering in Dharamshala, where he has lived since fleeing Tibet, they released a video message. He said, “I affirm that the institution of the Dalai Lama will continue.” He detailed that the responsibility for recognizing the future Dalai Lama rests solely with the Gaden Phodrang Trust, the official office managing his affairs. The Trust will consult the heads of Tibetan Buddhist traditions and trusted Dharma Protectors linked to the Dalai Lama lineage. They will follow traditional procedures for searching and recognizing the next Dalai Lama.
Dalai Lama Safeguards Succession Process from External Interference
Since 1959, the Dalai Lama has lived in exile after fleeing Tibet with thousands of followers following a failed uprising against Chinese control in Lhasa. He has continued to lead the Tibetan community from India, advocating for peace and Tibetan culture.
Concerns about his succession have grown, with many fearing that China may try to appoint its own Dalai Lama to tighten control over Tibet. The Dalai Lama addressed these worries by emphasizing that only the Gaden Phodrang Trust has the authority to choose his successor and warned that no other entity should interfere.
By placing the succession decision in the hands of the Tibetan trust, they seeks to protect the Tibetan Buddhist tradition from external influence, particularly from China. His announcement reaffirms his lifelong commitment to preserving Tibetan culture and spiritual leadership.
