MEA Reaffirms Arunachal’s Indian Status Amid China’s Detention Defense

India strongly protested after Pem Wang Thongdok, a UK-based Indian citizen, was detained in China because her passport listed Arunachal Pradesh as her birthplace. The MEA issued a strong demarche in Beijing and Delhi, demanding explanations from Chinese authorities. Thongdok was stopped during a three-hour transit at Shanghai International Airport while traveling from London to Japan. Chinese officials allegedly declared her passport “invalid” and refused to recognize her citizenship. India emphasized that this arbitrary detention violated international transit norms and endangered the dignity of its citizens. China Detains Indian Citizen Over Arunachal Pradesh Passport

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India raised the issue strongly with Chinese authorities, demanding clarification. He confirmed that Thongdok’s detention violated both international air travel conventions and China’s own 24-hour visa-free transit rules. Jaiswal reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh remains an inalienable part of India and cannot be disputed by China.
