Nepal plunged into turmoil on Tuesday after PM K. P. Sharma Oli resigned amid intensifying Gen Z protests. Demonstrators stormed Parliament, the PM’s Office, and torched homes of top leaders, including President Poudel. The Army, urging dialogue for peace, pledged to protect sovereignty and citizens while monitoring the unrest The Army stated that infiltrators in the protests carried out vandalism, arson, looting, targeted attacks, and attempted sexual assaults, and authorities will treat these as criminal acts and punish them strictly. Only essential services such as ambulances, fire engines, hearses, and vehicles carrying health workers or security forces can operate with coordination from local authorities.

Nepal: Bhattarai Warns Gen Z of Infiltration, Urges Reflection Amid Unrest

The Nepali Army announced that the current prohibitory order will remain in effect until 5 pm Wednesday, followed by a nationwide curfew until 6 am Thursday due to security threats, the Kathmandu Post reported.

Former Nepal PM Baburam Bhattarai cautioned Gen Z protesters that outsiders with hidden agendas may have infiltrated their movement, pointing to attacks on Parliament, Singha Durbar, courts, ministries, political offices, and leaders’ homes as acts unlikely committed by genuine demonstrators. Emphasizing his long support for alternative politics rooted in democracy and good governance, he shared that he and his 96-year-old father narrowly escaped harm during the unrest, and the protests destroyed many of his books gifted by young Nepalis abroad—though he managed to save Edward O. Wilson’s The Human Nature.which he said highlights humanity’s blend of altruism and selfishness, a lesson he urged Gen Z to reflect upon.
