    China Executes Ming Mafia Members

China executed 11 members of the notorious Ming mafia family, who ran scam centres along its north-eastern border with Myanmar, according to state media. In September, a court in Zhejiang province sentenced them for homicide, illegal detention, fraud, and operating gambling dens.

The Ming family controlled Laukkaing, transforming the town from a poor backwater into a hub of casinos and red-light districts. Ethnic militias captured Laukkaing in 2023 during a conflict with Myanmar’s army and handed the Ming family members over to China, ending their scam empire.

    Beijing Sends a Strong Warning

By executing the Ming family members, Beijing aimed to deter potential scammers. However, scam operations have moved to Myanmar’s border with Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, where China has less influence.

The UN estimates that hundreds of thousands of people, including thousands of Chinese citizens, were trafficked to run online scams across Southeast Asia. The Ming family and other clans profited massively, generating over 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) between 2015 and 2023. Their crimes caused the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens and injuries to many others.

More than 20 other Ming family members received prison sentences ranging from five years to life. Ming Xuechang, the clan patriarch, committed suicide in 2023 while trying to avoid arrest. Survivors described widespread violence and torture in the family’s compounds, highlighting the mafia’s brutal operations.
