    This came a day after Rakesh Kishore, a lawyer, attempted to hurl a shoe at CJI Gavai before he was restrained and escorted out by security personnel. Chief Justice of India BR Gavai on Tuesday expressed concern over how oral remarks made by judges during court proceedings are often misrepresented on social media.

    CJI Gavai cautions judges over social media misreporting during hearings

    CJI Gavai recalled how he once stopped his colleague. Justice K Vinod Chandran, from making remarks during a previous hearing to avoid them being misinterpreted on social media. “My learned brother, Justice K Vinod Chandran, wanted to say something during the Dheeraj Mor case. I stopped him because, on social media, we never know how things will be reported. I asked him to share his thoughts only with me,” the CJI said. He made this remark during a hearing of a petition filed by the All India Judges Association. Concerning the service conditions, pay scales, and career progression of judicial officers. The bench, comprising the CJI and Justice Chandran, later referred the matter to a five-judge bench.

    Attack on CJI Gavai

    On Monday, an elderly lawyer, angered by the CJI’s earlier remarks on restoring a Lord Vishnu idol at the Khajuraho complex in Madhya Pradesh. He tried to hurl a shoe at him during court proceedings. The CJI stayed composed and instructed the court staff and security to ignore the incident, allowing the lawyer to leave with a warning. Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me, the CJI, seated beside Justice K Vinod Chandran, told the lawyers before resuming the hearing. As security escorted the lawyer out, some individuals shouted, “We will not tolerate any insult to Sanatan.”
