Officials conducted a demolition drive near Syed Faiz Elahi mosque following strict Delhi High Court directions. The operation targeted encroached land adjoining the mosque and graveyard at Turkman Gate area. Early Wednesday, violence erupted during the anti-encroachment drive near Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan locality. At least five police personnel sustained injuries after clashes broke out at the site. Around 300 MCD officials and workers carried out demolition using heavy machinery at night. Some local residents allegedly hurled stones at officials, disrupting the demolition process significantly. Police responded by deploying tear gas shells to disperse the aggressive crowd. Stone pelting continued briefly as police teams attempted restoring law and order.

Police Action and Legal Background of Demolition

Senior officer Nidhin Valsan stated twenty five to thirty people participated in stone pelting. He confirmed five policemen suffered minor injuries during the violent confrontation. Authorities demolished a banquet hall and dispensary during the carefully planned nighttime operation. Police detained five accused and began identifying others using more than hundred video recordings.

The demolition followed a November 2025 High Court order clearing encroachments near Ramlila Ground. MCD clarified it would not touch the leased 0.195-acre land housing the mosque. The mosque committee challenged the demolition, claiming the land is notified waqf property. The High Court issued notices and scheduled further hearing while stating the matter needs consideration.
