Play Schools: Building Emotional Strength, Cognitive Growth, and School Readiness
Saritha Nagaraj, consultant in psychology and child development at Motherhood Hospitals, Bengaluru, highlights that play schools significantly support a child’s emotional resilience, cognitive development, and motor skills. They also foster essential skills like problem-solving, social interaction, and emotional control, while most importantly easing the shift into formal schooling. Additionally, she emphasizes that such early learning environments provide children with structured exposure to creativity, language development, and teamwork, which builds confidence and independence from a young age. Awareness of Early Education or Parental Pressure?
The question arises whether this surge is fueled by genuine awareness of early education or merely by rising parental pressure and competition. According to Singhal, while healthy competition among parents, particularly in urban India, does play a part, the real driver is the increasing recognition from paediatricians, educators, and policymakers about the crucial role early childhood years play in shaping a child’s future. He further notes that this shift reflects a growing acceptance of scientific research, which shows that early experiences strongly influence brain development, learning capacity, and social behaviour. As a result, parents today are more conscious of providing structured opportunities for holistic growth.
