US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said India has been somewhat uncooperative in ongoing trade negotiations with the United States.
Speaking to Fox Business on Tuesday, Bessent answered a question about whether the US could wrap up all tariffs and trade agreements by the end of October. He called that goal “aspirational” but confirmed that talks are progressing well. He noted that most major trade deals are nearing agreement, but Switzerland and India still need resolution, with India being “a bit recalcitrant.” He added that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and legal teams are working intensively to finalize the agreements, while President Donald Trump is actively pursuing peace, trade, and tax deals.

Despite ongoing talks, Trump recently imposed tariffs totaling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent targeting Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, which will take effect on August 27.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the measures as “unjustified and unreasonable” and vowed that India, like any major economy, will take all necessary steps to safeguard its national and economic interests. The US announced the additional tariffs just days before a delegation will visit India on August 25 for the sixth round of bilateral trade agreement negotiations. Both countries aim to conclude the first phase of the deal by October or November this year.
