    Mark Carney India visit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to India marks a strong diplomatic reset between the two countries. Just a year ago, ties were under serious strain. Now, both nations are moving toward deeper trade and strategic cooperation.

From Diplomatic Tension to Renewed Dialogue

In 2024, Canada expelled six Indian officials. The Canadian government alleged that individuals linked to India carried out intimidation and other unlawful activities.

The dispute followed former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement that India may have had links to the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia. India strongly denied the claim.

However, since Mark Carney took office, both sides have worked to ease tensions. India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh Patnaik, said the visit reflects a “total reset” in relations.

Nuclear Energy, Oil and Critical Minerals in Focus

Energy cooperation will be a major part of the talks.

Canada is expected to expand uranium exports to India. India also wants to buy more heavy crude oil and other energy products from Canada. Officials are discussing investments in pipelines, storage terminals and other infrastructure projects.

Both countries also plan to collaborate in critical minerals, which are essential for clean energy and advanced technology industries.

Expanding Cooperation in AI, Research and Education

    The agenda goes beyond energy.

India and Canada will explore partnerships in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, scientific research and higher education. Leaders aim to formalize these discussions through cooperation agreements during the visit.

The renewed Canada-India CEO Forum will also bring business leaders together to boost trade and investment.

Free Trade Deal Back on the Table

Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed in November to restart talks on a long-pending free trade agreement.

Previous negotiations had stalled. However, both economies have changed in recent years. Global trade shifts, including U.S. tariff policies, have encouraged both nations to diversify partnerships.

Officials believe the agreement could be finalized within a year if talks progress smoothly.

    A Broader Indo-Pacific Strategy

Carney’s visit to India forms part of a larger Indo-Pacific tour that includes Australia and Japan. The trip reflects his trade-focused foreign policy and Canada’s push to strengthen global partnerships.

According to Indian officials, Canada now appears ready to build multidimensional relationships with key global players like India.
