North Korea fired about 10 ballistic missiles toward the eastern sea on Saturday, according to South Korea’s military. The launch came as South Korea and the United States carried out a joint military exercise involving thousands of troops. Officials described the launch as a show of force by Pyongyang during the ongoing drills. The move has added to rising tensions in the region.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were launched from an area near the North Korean capital Pyongyang. Authorities did not immediately reveal how far the missiles traveled. Japan’s Defense Ministry said the weapons landed in waters outside the country’s exclusive economic zone. Regional authorities continued monitoring the situation closely.
South Korea’s military increased surveillance and strengthened readiness after the missile launches. Officials said they were sharing information closely with the United States and Japan. The allies remain alert for possible additional missile tests by North Korea. The coordination aims to maintain security and stability in the region.
Missile launch during US South Korea drills
The launches took place as US and South Korean forces conducted their annual spring military drills. Thousands of troops are participating in the exercises designed to strengthen defense cooperation. At the same time the United States is dealing with growing tensions in the Middle East. The global security situation has raised concerns about shifting military priorities.
South Korean media reports suggested that the United States could relocate some missile defense systems from the country to support operations in the Middle East. However President Lee Jae Myung’s office said it could not confirm details about US military operations. Officials said any possible relocation would not weaken the allies’ defense posture against nuclear armed North Korea.
North Korea has long criticized joint military exercises by the United States and South Korea. Pyongyang often describes the drills as preparations for invasion. In response the country frequently carries out missile launches and military demonstrations. In previous years North Korea has also conducted missile and artillery tests that it described as simulations of nuclear attacks on South Korea.
