    Chinese Man

A Chinese man living with severe paralysis has inspired widespread admiration after developing a smart farm control system and founding a start-up using only one movable finger and one toe. Li Xia, 36, from Chongqing in south-western China, lives with muscular dystrophy and relies on a ventilator to breathe.

Despite his condition, Li has turned his passion for technology into a functioning business, demonstrating remarkable resilience and innovation. His achievement has resonated across the country, with many praising his determination to overcome physical limitations and build a successful enterprise.

A childhood defined by illness and intellectual curiosity

According to the South China Morning Post, Li was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of five, a progressive illness that eventually forced him to drop out of school in the fifth grade. Despite this setback, his determination to learn remained undiminished.

Li later developed a strong interest in physics and computer science and began teaching himself programming at the age of 25 using online forums and resources. Recalling his early fascination with technology, he said his first encounter with computers came from a textbook his younger sister brought home, adding that every concept in it captured his interest.

He said he read the book repeatedly and eagerly anticipated the start of each new school year, hoping his sister would bring home more computer textbooks that would allow him to continue learning.

    Health setbacks spark life-changing innovation

As Li grew older, his muscular dystrophy progressively worsened, leaving him first unable to walk and later dependent on others for daily care. Over time, even basic functions such as eating and breathing became challenging, and in recent years he has retained movement in only one finger and one toe.

According to the South China Morning Post, Li fell into a coma in 2020 and underwent a tracheotomy, with doctors warning his family that his chances of survival were low. While recovering in early 2021, he came across the concept of soilless cultivation, which inspired him to devise an ambitious plan to integrate Internet of Things technology with modern farming.
