Nasry Asfura Wins Honduras Presidential Election Amid Controversy

Tight Race and Protests Shake Honduras
Nasry Asfura, the conservative National Party candidate backed by former US President Donald Trump, won Honduras’ closely contested presidential election with 40.3% of the vote. He narrowly defeated Salvador Nasralla of the centre-right Liberal Party, who garnered 39.5%.

Technical issues and fraud allegations delayed the announcement for weeks. Electoral officials recounted around 15% of votes by hand after the electronic tabulation system malfunctioned. The National Electoral Council blamed a private company for performing maintenance without notification, which disrupted the results.

US Involvement and Political Tensions Shape Honduras’ Future

After the declaration, Asfura stated he is ready to govern, while Nasralla rejected the results as illegitimate but urged his supporters to remain calm. Protests erupted across the country, particularly by supporters of the outgoing Libre Party, who accused authorities of manipulating the vote.

US Involvement and Political Tensions Influence Outcome
US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urged all parties to respect the results to ensure a peaceful transition. Earlier, Trump endorsed Asfura, warned of consequences if he lost, and pardoned former President Juan Orlando Hernández, a National Party member serving a US prison sentence on drug charges.

The election highlighted ongoing tensions in Honduran politics, with disputes over vote counting, international influence, and the country’s future direction.
