US President Donald Trump has reinforced his stance on Greenland. He said on social media that there is “no going back” and called the territory “imperative” to US interests. At a White House press conference, Trump refused to set limits on how far he would go to gain control of Greenland. He told reporters, “You’ll find out.”
Global leaders reacted with concern. French President Emmanuel Macron warned at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland that the world is moving toward a ruleless order. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the old global system will not return. Trump was scheduled to attend the Davos forum, but a minor electrical issue forced Air Force One to turn back. The White House confirmed he would travel on another aircraft. The delay left his schedule uncertain.
Trump Reasserts Greenland Ambitions
Trump said several meetings on Greenland were planned. He added that the issue would “work out pretty well.” Asked by the BBC whether the dispute could weaken Nato, Trump said he had done more for the alliance than any other leader. He described Nato as vital for global security. However, he questioned whether Nato members would defend the US if needed.
Trump did not rule out using military force to secure Greenland. When asked directly, he replied, “No comment.” Greenland’s Minister of Industry and Natural Resources, Naaja Nathanielsen, said Greenlanders were confused by Trump’s demands. She said they do not want to become Americans and want to protect their culture and right to self-determination.
Allies Push Back, Warn of Global Fallout
European leaders strongly opposed Trump’s position. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Europe remains committed to Arctic security through cooperation. She called Trump’s proposed tariffs a mistake. She added that the EU stands fully with Greenland and Denmark and said their sovereignty is non-negotiable. Canada echoed that stance and reaffirmed its commitment to Nato’s collective defence principle.
Tensions rose after Trump threatened new tariffs on European goods. He proposed a 200% tariff on French wine and champagne. Macron criticised the use of tariffs as coercive tools. He urged the EU to consider retaliation. Sources said the European Parliament may suspend approval of a recent US-EU trade deal.
