YouTube has rolled out a new artificial intelligence feature that lets Premium subscribers create music playlists simply by describing what they want to hear. The company has started releasing the update for Premium users on both iOS and Android devices, aiming to make music discovery quicker and more personalized.

With the new tool, users no longer need to search for songs manually or arrange tracks themselves. They can type or speak a short prompt, and YouTube’s AI instantly builds a playlist that matches the mood, genre, or theme. Whether someone wants “indie pop,” “sad post-rock,” “house mix for a chill party,” or even “90s Bollywood classics,” the system generates a tailored playlist within seconds.

This feature builds on YouTube’s earlier AI experiments. In July 2024, the platform tested a prompt-based tool that allowed listeners to create custom radio stations. The new AI playlist generator appears to be a more advanced version of that idea and is now reaching a wider group of paying subscribers.

How the AI Playlist Feature Works

Premium users can access the feature by opening the Library tab in the YouTube app, tapping the “New” button, and selecting “AI playlist.” The app then asks for a text or voice prompt, after which the AI compiles a custom playlist based on the description provided.

Competition Heats Up in Music Streaming

YouTube is not the only platform investing in AI-driven music discovery. Streaming services such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer have already introduced similar AI playlist and radio tools. As competition intensifies, companies continue adding smarter features to attract and retain listeners.

Strengthening the Value of YouTube Premium

The launch also reflects YouTube’s broader strategy to enhance its Premium subscription offering. Recently, the company began limiting song-lyrics access for some free users of the YouTube Music app as part of a small-scale experiment. Subscription growth remains a key focus for Google, YouTube’s parent company, which reported around 325 million paying subscribers across its services, including Google One and YouTube Premium.
