Nearly two decades after the 2006 Mumbai train bombings Blast Case that killed 189 people and injured over 800, the Bombay High Court on Monday acquitted all 12 convicted individuals, including five who were on death row. The division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Gauri Godse highlighted serious flaws in the prosecution’s case, noting that key witnesses lacked credibility, the identification parades raised doubts, and investigators extracted confessional statements through torture.

Court Flags Unreliable Testimonies and Procedural Lapses in 2006 Blast Case
The court found that one witness had testified in several unrelated crime branch cases, including the Ghatkopar blast case, which rendered his testimony unreliable. Additionally, several other witnesses were unable to convincingly explain how they suddenly identified the accused after several years.The judges also highlighted procedural shortcomings, stating that the prosecution failed to examine some witnesses during the trial Regarding the recovery of RDX and other explosives, the bench observed that the prosecution failed to prove the integrity of the evidence before it reached the Forensic Science Laboratory.

Verdict Brings Hope for the Innocent, Sets Precedent for Future Trials
Advocate Yug Mohit Chaudhry, who represented some of the accused, said the verdict brings hope to those wrongfully imprisoned. In response, the bench stated, “We simply fulfilled our duty and responsibility.” Public Prosecutor Raja Thakare, while accepting the court’s decision, said the judgment would serve as a “guiding light” for future trials. The 2006 Mumbai train blasts remain one of India’s deadliest terror attacks, marked by seven coordinated explosions in first-class compartments during peak hours on the Western Railway line.
