Maharashtra Village of 1,500 Reports 27,000 ‘Births’ in Just Three Months

Authorities detected a shocking irregularity in Shendurusani village of Yavatmal district, Maharashtra, after registering 27,397 births in just three months. The village has only 1,500 residents, which raised serious concerns of fraud. Officials discovered the discrepancy during a special drive to verify delayed birth and death registrations between September and November 2025. The abnormal numbers prompted authorities to investigate possible misuse of the Civil Registration System (CRS). They suspected that criminals used the inflated records for identity theft or fraudulent access to government benefits. The district health officer immediately alerted Yavatmal city police upon detecting the irregularities. After receiving the complaint, the Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer formed an inquiry committee under the deputy CEO. The committee conducted an on-site inspection to confirm the authenticity of the entries. Investigators continue to examine the records to identify responsible parties and prevent further fraud.

27,000 Fake Births in Three Months in Maharashtra Village

Investigators discovered that criminals compromised the CRS login ID of Shendurusani gram panchayat and mapped it to Maharashtra Mumbai. This finding indicated that a sophisticated cybercrime racket targeted official registration systems deliberately. The investigation revealed that criminals may have used fraudulent entries to obtain government scheme benefits illegally. Officials confirmed that all 27,397 birth registrations and seven death entries occurred outside the village’s jurisdiction. Authorities are now probing how criminals manipulated the CRS ID and who orchestrated the cyberattack. The inquiry committee examined whether criminals organized the fake registrations for identity fraud purposes. Investigators are reviewing technical logs and digital footprints to trace the perpetrators effectively. They are also assessing vulnerabilities in other panchayats’ CRS systems to prevent similar attacks.

Senior BJP leader Kirit Somaiya visited Shendurusani village to investigate the fraudulent registrations personally. He revealed that criminals listed 99% of the names from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. Somaiya demanded that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis cancel all illegal birth registrations immediately. He described the case as a massive cyber fraud operation targeting government systems directly. Somaiya emphasized that criminals’ misuse of official records undermines governance and public trust. He called on authorities to take strict action against the perpetrators and strengthen cybersecurity for CRS portals. Investigators are examining whether criminals used the fraudulent entries for financial or political gains.

Police have registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
