Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah submitted his resignation to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday morning but withdrew it within hours. In his letter, he reportedly voiced dissatisfaction with the party leadership. He said the leadership had sidelined him and failed to recognise his role within the state unit.

Several leaders soon reached his residence in Guwahati to persuade him to reconsider his decision. Those who met him included Gaurav Gogoi, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, Pradyut Bordoloi, and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi. They urged Borah to stay with the party amid growing internal tensions.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly reacted to the development. He called Borah the “last Hindu leader” in the Assam Congress and announced plans to meet him. Sarma also claimed that dissatisfaction within the Congress was increasing. He suggested that more leaders might soon switch sides.

Bhupen Borah Withdraws Resignation Shortly After Stepping Down

Borah led the Assam Congress from 2021 to 2025 before Gaurav Gogoi replaced him. He later clarified that no personal grievances influenced his decision. A two-time MLA, he said he had served the party for over three decades. He also expressed concern about its future direction and promised to share details later.

The internal rift in the Assam Congress began last year when the party appointed Gogoi as state chief. The leadership felt Borah had reached his limit in the role. However, many leaders credited him with rebuilding the organisation after successive defeats. His brief resignation ahead of the upcoming Assam elections has exposed tensions within the party.
