In a major political development, Tarique Rahman took oath as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. Earlier in the day, Rahman and newly elected Members of Parliament from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party took oath at the National Parliament in Dhaka. The party secured a sweeping victory in the 13th Parliamentary Elections held on February 12.
The ceremony marked a turning point in the nation’s politics. It ended years of political exile for BNP leaders. It also concluded the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Rahman became the first male Prime Minister in over 30 years. He now leads the country during its recovery from the 2024 student-led protests.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath at 4 pm. The ceremony took place at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. Authorities chose the outdoor venue to host nearly 1,200 guests.
