New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor voiced disappointment over Colombia’s response to the recent events in Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, saying there’s no comparison between countries that send terrorists and those that defend themselves. Tharoor, who’s currently in Colombia with a group of MPs as part of India’s global effort to highlight its stance against terrorism, criticized the Colombian government for offering condolences to Pakistan for the lives lost in the Indian strikes. “We were a bit disheartened by Colombia’s reaction, which focused on the casualties in Pakistan instead of standing in solidarity with the victims of terrorism,” he stated.
Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor emphasized that India has solid evidence linking the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives, to Pakistan-backed terrorism. “We’re simply exercising our right to self-defence,” he said, adding that India is open to having a detailed discussion with Colombia about the situation. Drawing a parallel, he noted, “Just as Colombia has faced numerous terror attacks, India too has suffered through countless such incidents for nearly forty years.”

Tharoor Questions Colombia’s Stand, Says No Equivalence Between Terror and Self-Defence
Mr. Tharoor pointed out that China is the primary supplier of Pakistan’s military equipment, providing around 81% of it. He also referenced the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor while stressing that much of this military aid is not defensive but intended for offensive purposes. “The issue isn’t with defence, but with the continuous acts of terror targeted at us,” he said, highlighting India’s core concern.

The delegation, led by Tharoor, landed in Colombia on Thursday after prior visits to Panama and Guyana. While in Bogotá, the group will engage with Members of Congress, government ministers, think tanks, and media representatives. The team includes leaders from multiple parties such as Sarfraz Ahmad (JMM), G M Harish Balayogi (TDP), Shashank Mani Tripathi (BJP), Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), and former Indian ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu. This mission is part of a broader initiative involving seven cross-party delegations reaching out to 33 countries following the Pahalgam terror attack.
