Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara expressed deep disappointment after Sri Lanka’s exit from the T20 World Cup, stating that the entire nation is in pain and urgent reforms are necessary to prevent further decline. The team’s campaign came to an end after a crushing 61-run defeat against New Zealand national cricket team in Colombo, leaving supporters shocked and experts questioning the team’s direction.

Soon after the elimination, Sangakkara took to social media to reflect the emotional turmoil felt across the country and within the team. He acknowledged the frustration among fans while also emphasizing that players were equally distressed. Drawing from his own experiences, he noted that dealing with such moments inside the dressing room is extremely challenging.

He also reminded current players about the honor and responsibility that comes with representing their nation. According to him, playing for the country is both a privilege and a heavy obligation, requiring resilience during difficult phases like this.

The loss was especially hard to digest as Sri Lanka were playing at home, where expectations were high for a strong performance. Despite putting New Zealand under pressure early by reducing them to 84/6, Sri Lanka failed to maintain control as Mitchell Santner and Cole McConchie steadied the innings. Later, Sri Lanka’s batting unit crumbled during the chase, sealing back-to-back Super Eight defeats and ending their hopes of reaching the semifinals.

However, Sangakkara stressed that the issue goes beyond a single defeat. He warned that Sri Lankan cricket must adapt to the rapidly evolving modern game. Without necessary changes and progress at all levels, he cautioned, the team risks becoming irrelevant in the global cricket landscape.
