A viral video allegedly showing municipal councillors from Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, discussing the equal sharing of bribes has sparked widespread debate on social media.
The video reportedly shows a group of councillors standing together with Gangajal in their hands and repeating an oath led by one member. According to the allegations circulating online, the councillors promise to divide any money received through municipal activities equally among 60 members. The video has attracted considerable attention because viewers interpreted the statements as an apparent agreement to share bribes among the group. The purported video began circulating widely on social media on August 25, 2026. However, the authenticity of the video and the identities of everyone appearing in it have not been independently verified.

Viral Oath Raises Questions Over Municipal Accountability
During the alleged oath, participants reportedly state that whatever comes inside the municipality will be divided among 60 people. They also allegedly promise to remain united if authorities take action against any member of their group. Some participants reportedly make objectionable references to a person they describe as a traitor for allegedly breaking the group’s agreement. Municipal Commissioner Saumya Gururani reportedly told the Press Trust of India that officials have ordered an inquiry into the matter. She stated that the video dates back to November 2025, before she became the municipal commissioner. Authorities will examine the circumstances surrounding the recording and determine whether the participants violated any applicable rules or laws. Officials are expected to take further action based on the findings of the inquiry.
The incident has renewed concerns about corruption, transparency, and accountability within India’s urban local bodies. Allegations involving elected representatives can damage public confidence when authorities fail to investigate them properly. India has continued efforts to strengthen institutions and address corruption through laws, oversight mechanisms, and administrative reforms. Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index also provides an international comparison of perceived public-sector corruption. The Shahjahanpur video should therefore remain treated as an allegation until authorities establish the facts through their investigation. A transparent inquiry can help determine whether the recording accurately represents the statements and actions of the people shown. Authorities must examine credible evidence carefully and follow due process before reaching conclusions or taking disciplinary action. Effective oversight and consistent enforcement can strengthen public trust and discourage corruption within local government institutions.
