A 63-year-old man arrested for opening fire at Farooq Abdullah, former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, told police he had planned to kill the veteran leader for nearly two decades. Officials said he described it as his “personal agenda”.
Police identified the accused as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a resident of Jammu. He allegedly fired a shot at Abdullah from point-blank range as the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference chief left a wedding function in the Greater Kailash area on Wednesday night.
However, Abdullah’s security personnel quickly intervened. They foiled the attack and overpowered the gunman before he could cause any harm.
Gunman Opens Fire at Wedding Venue Targeting Farooq Abdullah
The incident occurred when Farooq Abdullah left the wedding venue after attending the ceremony for more than an hour. Surinder Choudhary, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, and senior Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Nasir Aslam Wani accompanied him at the time.
CCTV footage from the venue shows the accused approaching Abdullah from behind and pointing a pistol at him from close range before firing a shot. The bullet missed the former chief minister, and security personnel quickly overpowered the gunman before he could fire again. Police said they seized the pistol used in the incident and took the accused into custody.

Police Launch Probe into Attack on Farooq Abdullah
Eyewitnesses said the accused opened fire as Farooq Abdullah and other guests left the venue after dinner. People at the function caught the accused and beat him. Security personnel later took him away.
Police officials said senior officers rushed to the spot soon after the incident. They launched a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
Omar Abdullah said his father narrowly escaped the attack. He credited the security team for foiling the attempt.
In a post on X, Omar Abdullah said a man with a loaded pistol reached point-blank range and fired a shot at the veteran leader. He said the close protection team quickly deflected the shot and ensured the assassination attempt failed.
